The silence of the house was a constant torment. I wandered from room to room, touching the cold surfaces, seeking connection, finding none. The inspector had mentioned something about a safe room hidden behind the fireplace. "The victim..." he had begun, before trailing off, understanding dawning on his face. The story was gruesome. I felt myself shrinking, becoming invisible in the vast, echoing emptiness. The dust motes danced in the sunlight, mocking my stillness. I was nothing but a ghost in my own home.
