Gemotions

The aroma of carnations filled the small living room. He held the bouquet, a bright island of cheer in the dim space. A smile tugged at his lips, a rare occurrence. He sniffed at the flowers again, trying to work out the mystery, but the mystery was a familiar ache in his chest. His fingers traced the delicate petals, he tried to pinpoint a name that might have come with them. He had no one. He thought of all the times he had tried to make an impact, make a difference, and failed. He tossed the flowers on the couch and went out.
