The sun streamed through the window, but the warmth did nothing to chase away the chill that had settled in Elizabeth’s bones. The photos she had found in her grandmother’s trunk showed her grandmother, often described as a woman of simple pleasures, in a series of opulent settings, adorned in jewels and furs, accompanied by men she didn't recognize.

Her fingers trembled as she held the images. She knew she shouldn't look at them. Yet she couldn't stop herself. The carefully constructed stories of her family's past were becoming a blur.

She abruptly stood up and began pacing the room, feeling restless and confined. The silence of the house pressed in on her, and the weight of the revelations made her feel strangely heavy.
