"The research team?" Amelia's voice cracked, a small, involuntary sound escaping her lips. Her heart thudded hard, a frantic beat against her ribs. She felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. It was as if her world had tilted on its axis.

The thought of leaving her position, her comfort zone, her well-established relationships… it was a blow. Her hands flew to her mouth, stifling a gasp. Her usual calm demeanor was shattered. She wanted to scream, to run.

She sank back into her chair, the leather cool and unyielding against her back. The world outside the window seemed distant and unreal.
