"And then you scan the barcode, and the system auto-populates the information. It's really quite streamlined," John explained, his voice sounding distant, almost detached. He gestured towards the scanner with a flourish that felt foreign, alien to him. His hands were clammy.

David’s face remained a blank canvas. He listened intently, making notes in a small notepad. The smell of cardboard and industrial cleaning fluid filled the air, a scent that had, for years, been synonymous with his routine. He suddenly felt a sense of awe at how much time he had spent there.
