A giggle escaped Leo’s lips as the bookshelf swung inward, revealing a staircase spiraling downwards. He'd always suspected something was amiss with the library; the wall felt hollow, and a draft always seemed to emanate from behind the towering volumes. Now, the truth was laid bare. His stomach did a little flip. He took a tentative step towards the opening, then another. The air felt heavy with the scent of dust and something else, something metallic and faintly sweet.

"Incredible," he muttered, his voice barely audible above the rush of his own thoughts. He pictured the secrets this room might hold, the stories locked away within its walls. He glanced over his shoulder, making sure his wife wasn’t watching, a wide smile spreading across his face.
