He stared at the handwritten list, his throat tightening. He'd stumbled upon it while tidying the junk drawer. “Visit Japan.” “Write a song.” “Learn to surf.” He felt a sudden, inexplicable sense of urgency. The space around him felt constricting.

He glanced around the cluttered apartment, at the overflowing bookshelves and the dusty furniture. He saw his own reflection in the window, a pale and unfamiliar face.

He picked up his phone, scrolling through his contacts, but he found he couldn't call anyone. He felt a strange disconnection, a sense of being adrift. He felt a desperate need to fix something, anything, to stop the pounding in his head.
