He’d known, of course, that there was a chance, but the reality still struck him like a punch to the gut. The side-by-side comparison of his unpublished manuscript and Finch’s bestseller. He felt a heat creeping up his neck. A shudder ran through him, leaving him trembling. He wanted to scream.

He ran a hand through his hair, tugging at the strands. His muscles ached. He paced his apartment, too wound up to stay still. The anger was there, of course, but mixed with something else, something…primal. Something that made him feel very, very alive.

He stopped, his gaze fixed on his reflection in the mirror. His eyes, usually mild, were wide, dilated. His jaw was clenched. He felt a sudden, irresistible need to clench his fists. The energy in his body was almost unbearable. He had to act. He had to *do* something.
