The news hit her in the gut. All the years spent admiring him, and now this. A cold dread settled in her stomach, followed by a flush that climbed her neck and made her skin prickle. She was furious, yes, but also… something else. She felt a restless energy, a need to move, to pace.

She pushed herself up from the chair. She walked over to the window, staring out at the rain-slicked city streets. The gray sky mirrored her mood, yet she felt strangely…invigorated. The air in her apartment felt thick, charged. Her heart was racing. She wanted to scream, to smash something, to… feel.

She crossed her arms over her chest, rubbing them briskly. Her skin felt hypersensitive, every sensation heightened. The silence in the room was deafening. Her breath caught in her throat. She found herself clenching and unclenching her fists.
