It was the anniversary of her father's death, and Maya had promised to go to her mother's. Now, she sat in her car, the engine idling, staring at the published article on her phone. The article that was hers, but not. The knowledge that she'd poured her heart into that piece and it would forever be attributed to another person left her hollow.

She could barely breathe. She felt a deep, profound sense of… something. She pressed her forehead against the steering wheel, the cool metal a comfort. She felt a need to disappear, to hide from the world, and especially from her mother.
