The scent of old paper and leather hung heavy in the air. John sat in his favorite armchair, the worn copy of "Hamlet" open on his lap. He had been looking for a particular passage. Instead, he found a folded letter.

The letter detailed a secret affair between his wife and his closest friend. The words seemed to jump off the page, each syllable a blow. His jaw tightened.

He threw the book across the room, the impact barely registering. He ran a hand through his hair, his mind racing. He felt a deep sense of wrongness, of profound unease. He felt as if the room was closing in on him.
