The breath caught in Chloe’s throat, making her cough. "Jason Barnes has requested to be your friend," the notification announced. Jason. The boy who’d relentlessly teased her about her braces, her glasses, her…everything.

Her hands clenched into fists, the nails digging into her palms. She felt a heat rise in her cheeks, and her pulse quickened. She felt a strong urge to scream, to lash out, to somehow express the flood of emotions churning inside her.

She looked at the screen, her vision blurred with a sudden rush of tears. What did he expect? Apology? Forgiveness? She deleted the request without a second thought, the action somehow oddly satisfying.
