The florist had been so polite. "Just sign here, ma'am." Emily had barely registered the transaction. Now, she held the flowers – a large, elaborate arrangement of orchids and hydrangeas – in her car. She looked from them to the empty passenger seat. Where did these come from? She felt a cold dread creep into her bones. She wasn't expecting any flowers. Definitely not these flowers. She checked the rearview mirror, her eyes darting between the bouquet and the road. She pressed the gas, driving with a newfound sense of urgency, the scent of the flowers becoming suddenly oppressive.
