The scent of lavender from the bath salts seemed to mock her. Liam was in the kitchen, talking low. She sat on the edge of the bed, the warm water now cold. Her reflection in the mirror stared back, a stranger.

She’d heard the hurried whispers, the way his voice dropped whenever she entered the room. He’d claimed it was a work matter, always. A coldness was seeping into her bones. She hugged herself, trying to gather some semblance of comfort.

She wanted to believe him. She *did* believe him, didn’t she? The thought was a sharp jab to her ribs. She couldn't breathe properly. She felt completely off balance.
