He’d booked a table at his favourite Italian restaurant, the one with the string lights and the amazing pasta. He arrived early, nervous and excited. He was going to ask her to move in. Then, *she* arrived.

He recognized the other man immediately. He was his best friend from college. And there they were, holding hands, laughing, sharing a plate of bruschetta.

His legs felt weak. He took a staggering step backwards. The smile he had practiced all morning vanished. His mouth went dry. He felt a throbbing pulse in his temples. He just wanted to be invisible.
