“Not possible,” Leo muttered, staring at the family tree on the website. He'd always known who he was. Now, the brightly colored branches of the tree, usually a source of comfort, appeared to be taunting him. His life was suddenly full of gaps.

He sat heavily on the couch. He picked up a framed photograph of his parents, smiling, and studied their faces, searching for something, anything, that could validate this new information. He felt a disconnect, as if he was watching a play, unable to connect with the characters.

He let the photo fall to the cushion. The silence of the room was overwhelming.
