“What is this?” Mark croaked, his voice barely a whisper. He held the letter up to the light. It was addressed to his high school crush, a girl he'd worshipped from afar. He barely remembered the contents, but the handwriting was unmistakable. He sat down heavily on the bed, the mattress sinking beneath him.

He felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead. The room seemed to shrink, the walls closing in. He stared at the letter, as though it held some secret meaning, some hidden truth. The present felt like a dream. He felt like he was a stranger in his own life.
