It was the handwriting that stopped her first. Olivia's fingers brushed against the familiar scrawl, and a chill went down her spine. The letter was from her former mentor, a woman she’d both loved and resented, a woman she had thought she’d left far behind. The air in her small apartment seemed to thicken.

She leaned back against the wall, her breath catching in her throat. She reread the words, searching for a clue, an explanation, anything. She felt a dizzying sensation, as if the ground beneath her feet was unstable. Her pulse quickened.

“This… this is surreal,” she whispered. She felt a sudden need to be outside, to breathe fresh air, to escape the confines of her own mind.
