The flickering fluorescent lights of the clinic seemed to pulse in time with Elias's racing heart. He clutched the flimsy paperwork, the diagnosis a jumble of unfamiliar medical jargon. His gaze kept flicking to the woman across from him, who was staring out the window, a similar sheaf of papers trembling in her hands. He hadn't expected to find another one.

He cleared his throat. "So…this is…" he trailed off, unable to articulate the sheer absurdity of the situation. Her head snapped around, her eyes wide, mirroring his own confused expression.

"You too?" she finally asked, her voice a little breathless. He nodded slowly, the silence between them heavy with the unspoken: how? Why? And what in the world did it all mean?
