“Remember that internship?” Leo asked, a cheerful lilt in his voice. He was smiling and gesturing enthusiastically as he regaled the table with stories of his successes. He remembered the exciting projects, the supportive mentors, and the valuable lessons he’d learned. He'd loved it.

I flinched inwardly. I remembered the relentless pressure, the impossible deadlines, and the way Leo had consistently hogged the credit for our collaborative efforts. I had worked myself ragged to prop him up. I'd been the one left picking up the pieces when he failed. No mention of that.

Leo clinked his glass with the other diners. He suggested they "do it again" for old times' sake. The suggestion scraped against my nerves. I forced a smile and took a large gulp of my wine. The taste was metallic.
