The sudden stop jolted David. He watched, with a flicker of concern, as his colleague, Carol, began to wring her hands. David, however, felt his chest expand, and a lightness in his being. He took a deep breath, the air smelling slightly of ozone, and felt the tension melt away.

He observed the elevator’s interior with unusual fascination. The intricate patterns in the metalwork, the reflection of the emergency lights in the polished panels, even the way the air felt thick and still.

"We have to call someone!" Carol whispered, her eyes wide.

David, meanwhile, found his gaze drawn to the tiny, almost imperceptible scratches on the elevator door. He felt a sense of calm wash over him. “Don’t worry. We’re in no hurry, are we?”
