He floated on the inflatable swan in his pool, the afternoon sun warming his skin. The gentle lapping of the water against the swan’s plastic body created a soothing rhythm. He’d just finished reading a chapter of his favorite book, the words still echoing in his mind like a pleasant dream. A metallic clang, followed by a frustrated grunt, ripped him from his reverie.

"Hey! Can you turn that down?" a woman’s voice called from over the fence. "Some of us are trying to have a quiet afternoon!" He lifted himself onto the side of the pool, a slight frown creasing his brow. "Oh, dear. I didn't realize the music was that loud. I'll get right on it!" He reached for the volume control, a sense of mild disappointment prickling his skin as he lowered the speakers' output.
