The afternoon stretched before him, an endless expanse of unused time. He had a list of chores, but the thought of tackling any of them filled him with a profound lack of enthusiasm. He slumped onto the sofa, the cushions molding around him, his posture reflecting his inner state. The silence of the house amplified the emptiness he felt.

He flipped through the channels on the television, the rapid succession of images doing little to alleviate the feeling of… something. He finally switched it off. He needed something to do. He picked up his daughter’s tablet from the coffee table. She had left it there.

He started mindlessly scrolling through her usual social media feeds, then noticed a new app, cleverly disguised with an innocuous icon. He clicked on it.
