The afternoon sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. The silence was deafening. He sat at his desk, staring at the blank screen of his laptop. He had deadlines to meet, projects to complete, but the motivation to do so had vanished. He felt a distinct lack of… engagement. He found a letter tucked between a credit card offer and a utility bill. The handwriting was small, delicate, but completely unfamiliar. He opened it with a shrug.

The letter was an apology. It was a confession from a distant relative, a woman he had never met, who admitted to a long-ago instance of causing him harm. The letter detailed the circumstances, the lies and manipulations that had led to the estrangement of the family. He felt a sudden, unwelcome heat bloom in his cheeks.
