He slammed the file onto his desk, the sound echoing around the empty office. He glared at the report, each sentence a stab. He'd been sure. He'd poured over every detail, worked the extra hours, but it didn't matter.

He ran a hand through his hair, his fingers tangling. The knot in his stomach tightened with each passing second. He felt a burning in his eyes, a tightness in his throat. He refused to let it out.

The phone rang, jolting him. It was a client. He spoke to them, his voice tight and clipped, the words feeling false on his tongue. He was impatient, wanted to hang up.
