The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the small bakery. Ethan watched, his gaze drifting over the counter of pastries. He waited patiently for Maya, who was supposed to be showing off her new chef skills to him. She had recently bragged about getting a job at a Michelin-starred restaurant.

He appreciated the comforting atmosphere. He knew that the restaurant business was brutally hard work and often involved long hours. He felt curious, and he wanted to hear more about this impressive career move. He had already seen a few of her recent photos, which looked a little too good to be true, given what he knew about the real world.

The bell above the door chimed, and Maya walked in, her face flushed with excitement. Her clothing was clean, but looked a little too casual for the job she was claiming. Ethan pointed to the seat, and smiled.
