James felt like he could take on the world. He’d just closed a deal that would secure the company a significant profit, and the feeling of accomplishment coursed through him like an electric current. He’d even splurged on a fancy coffee, savoring each sip. The office felt brighter, the air crisper, and he was ready to tackle the day with boundless energy.

He heard some chattering, and he found himself listening to the conversation of two of his colleagues, one a recent hire. He only caught bits and pieces of it, but it was clear that the new hire was extremely pleased with his compensation package.

The new hire was clearly thrilled, and his energy was contagious. "Honestly, I wasn't expecting so much. My pay has jumped since taking the job, and I'm really excited about that," he told his colleague.

James swallowed hard, the coffee suddenly losing its flavor. He continued his work, but the sense of optimism had vanished. His desk seemed smaller, his chair uncomfortable, the air thick with something he couldn't quite define.
