The vibrant colors of the fall leaves outside the window mirrored the feelings of excitement coursing through Michael's veins. He was ready to tackle a mountain of tasks. He smiled at everyone he passed in the office, his good mood practically radiating outwards. He had just secured a significant discount on a major purchase for the company, and he was eager to share the good news with his team.

He walked over to the water cooler, and there, he overheard a conversation between two younger members of his team. He paused, wanting to know what was going on.

"I know, right? I'm making double what I was at my last job," one of the employees said, with a tone of utter disbelief.

Michael's smile faltered.

He made a quick exit, finding himself unable to concentrate. He spent the remainder of the morning staring at his computer screen, the words blurring before his eyes.
