From her bedroom window, facing the house, Maya watched the inevitable. The bright morning sun seemed to mock the scene, but she couldn't tear her eyes away. She had helped her parents pack away all of the things. Now, all that was left was the structure.

She took a deep breath. She remembered the games she played in the garden, the secret hideaways behind the rose bushes, the first kiss shared under the old oak tree. Her lower lip trembled. She wanted to go out there, to beg the workers to stop, to offer a piece of herself in exchange for the house's survival, but she knew it was futile.
