Her stomach twisted, and she felt a chill despite the warm apartment. Her essay, “The Bridge Builder,” was prominently displayed on the alumni section of the college’s website. It was about her work with Habitat for Humanity, the sweat, the blisters, the satisfaction of seeing a family’s joy.

She glanced around the room, at the worn couch, the chipped mugs on the table. She wanted to hug the world. She wanted to connect with people. She quickly took a shower and took some extra time to be more thoughtful.

She knew she needed to channel this strange, swirling feeling, not let it consume her. She grabbed her keys, a sudden impulse taking hold. She called a local soup kitchen to see if they needed volunteers.
