The morning sun spilled across Elias's workbench, illuminating the fine dust motes dancing in the air. He hummed a tuneless melody as he carefully sanded a piece of cherry wood, the smooth grain a pleasure under his fingertips. He was finally getting the hang of this. His latest creation, a small, ornate music box, was nearly complete. A smile played on his lips. His mentor, Master Thorne, would be proud.

He paused, glancing toward Thorne's usual seat. It was empty. "He's probably just running late," Elias murmured, picking up a fine brush. He dipped it into the varnish and began applying a delicate coat to the lid.

The workshop door swung open, and Mrs. Gable, Thorne's housekeeper, entered. "Elias, dear," she said, her voice soft. "Have you seen Master Thorne? He left a note for you." Her eyes were a little damp. Elias felt a slight chill ripple through him.

He took the note, his fingers suddenly clumsy. The handwriting was familiar, but the words were a shock. *Elias, I’ve decided to retire. Thank you for everything. – Thorne.* The music box felt heavy in his hands. He re-read the message, his jaw tightening.
