Gemotions

The paper crackled as Sarah smoothed it flat on the kitchen table. The letter, penned in elegant cursive, was a declaration of independence, a promise to break free from the suffocating expectations of her family. She’d written it when she was fourteen. Now, at forty, she could see how they had tried to protect her.

A wave of nausea washed over her. She knew that she had made the right choices, at least, she liked to tell herself she had. She hadn’t changed, not really.

She folded the letter, a determined look on her face. She would hide it away again, and continue with her life.
