He stared at the letter, its yellowed paper a testament to the years that had passed. The words, addressed to his grandfather, were a challenge to authority, a demand for freedom. He'd never sent it, of course. He couldn’t. He had to think of the family.

The attic was silent except for the frantic thumping of his own heart. He hadn't let anyone know about him. He was tired of being a disappointment.

He dropped the letter, letting it flutter to the floor. He turned and left the attic. He would make them see, somehow.
