“Grandpa, look!” Little Emily bounced on the sofa, displaying her latest creation. It was a drawing of a creature he’d known as a child, a glowing orb called "Lum." Michael’s hand instinctively reached for his chest, where a dull ache settled. He hadn’t felt this vulnerable in years.

His immediate thought was to call his son. Michael felt overwhelmed by the simplicity of the drawings, and the implications of them. He wasn't fit to be in charge of this.

He forced a smile, but his voice cracked. “That’s… very creative, sweetheart.” He felt like a fraud. He desperately needed his son to return and take over.
