The headline, "Secrets of a Teenage Heart," was a punch in the gut. He'd spilled his soul into those pages, pouring out his insecurities and his craving for approval. Now the world had access to his deepest fears. His throat closed up. He was at a loss.

He stumbled to the kitchen, seeking the comfort of routine. He poured a glass of water, his hand shaking so violently the liquid sloshed over the side. He felt the familiar weight of helplessness press down on him. He felt the need to have someone make the decisions.
