He'd spent the last week in a self-imposed prison, the walls of his apartment closing in. The television droned in the background, offering no solace. He had lost track of what day it was, his days blurring into one long, monotonous stretch of time.

He dragged himself to the door, intending to pick up the mail. That's when he noticed. The vacant space where his car once stood. A cold dread washed over him. He felt…numb. The missing vehicle was just another weight added to the already unbearable load.

He closed the door, the click echoing in the stillness.
