Gemotions

The aroma of freshly baked cookies filled the air, a scent that normally brought comfort. But today, the smell seemed to mock her. Her best friend, Rachel, was hosting a baking party, and she was supposed to be there. But, today was her birthday as well. She’d planned to spend the afternoon painting in her studio, a solitary activity she cherished.

She felt a strange disconnect from her own emotions, as though they were locked away in a distant room. The cheerful chatter of the other bakers grated on her nerves. She kept misreading the instructions, making silly mistakes.

“Are you sure you’re feeling well, sweetheart?” Rachel asked, her brow furrowed with concern. She felt a burning sensation in her eyes, but refused to cry. The studio seemed a galaxy away. She felt a growing, desperate need to be alone, to escape the noise and the expectations.
