The scent of pipe tobacco, usually a comfort, now caused a flicker of unease in Robert. He surveyed his collection of pipes, a vast array of shapes and finishes. He felt a deep sense of separation from the hobby. The ritual of packing, lighting, and savoring the smoke felt like a chore now.

His daughter, Clara, however, was fascinated. She would watch him, asking questions about the different tobaccos, the history of the pipes. "Can I try one, Dad?" she once asked.

Robert shook his head, a hollow ache in his chest. He felt like he was watching his younger self through a hazy glass, her curiosity reminding him of a passion he no longer felt.
