Gemotions

The office was a maze of cubicles. "Okay, so the first thing is the interdepartmental email system," I began, my voice a dull monotone. My replacement, a nervous young man, took notes furiously.

I felt a strange sense of detachment, as if I were observing the scene from a distance. The computer screen glowed, the fluorescent lights hummed. The usual anxieties of the workplace, the irritations, the frustrations, had vanished.

"Do you have any questions?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, when he hesitated. He shook his head, and I felt relieved. I watched him take over, my own emotions like distant echoes.
