The morning’s energy, the anticipation of the job, didn’t touch her. She felt like she was wading through water, slowly, deliberately. The prospect of seeing her friend, Alex, during the interview didn’t spark any rivalry.

Alex, ever the competitor, was already pacing, rehearsing his pitch. "I'm going to knock their socks off!" Alex said, pumping his fist in the air. She just offered a small, accepting smile.

During the interview, her answers were measured and gentle. She seemed… receptive. Later, after the interview, Alex was frustrated. She simply agreed with his assessment.
