"To Ms. Davies," the package was addressed. He recognized the name as the previous tenant, but he did not know her. The afternoon light slanted through the living room window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. He felt no urge to move quickly.

He sat on the worn couch and placed the box on his lap. It was small. He gently pulled at the tape. A light perfume scent wafted out as he opened the flaps. Inside was a small velvet bag. He reached into the bag and pulled out a single, polished stone.
