Rain lashed against the windows, mimicking the rhythmic thrum in Clara's chest. She sat curled on the sofa, the soft cushions molding to her frame. Liam paced, agitated, his words a flurry of reasons why a cat was a terrible idea. She watched him, unblinking, the arguments washing over her like the downpour.

He gestured wildly, nearly knocking over a stack of magazines. "Think about the hair! The litter box! The… the responsibility!" His voice rose, then cracked.

Clara simply nodded, the gesture almost imperceptible. A faint smile touched her lips as she watched him. The warm, wool blanket she'd wrapped around herself felt comforting against her skin. The thought of disagreeing, of interrupting his frantic energy, felt impossibly distant.
