"It's just a house," his partner had said, trying to be helpful. But it wasn't just a house. It was where he'd learned to ride his bike, where he'd skinned his knees, where he'd celebrated birthdays. He couldn't shake the feeling of being utterly depleted. The demolition was a month away.

He found himself avoiding all social interaction, canceling plans, staying home alone. He had to force himself to eat. He slept for hours, trying to escape the thoughts that gnawed at him.

He looked at the calendar, each passing day bringing the inevitable closer. The thought of it, of the house being gone, sucked the life right out of him. He was losing his anchor, and with it, he feared, a piece of himself.
