The world seemed to have drained of color. Leo dragged his feet down the bustling city street, the vibrant billboards and chatter of pedestrians fading into a dull hum. Just hours ago, he’d bumped into Maya at a work event. He’d practically skipped over, beaming with anticipation, ready to share the silly stories that had bonded them as kids. He started “Maya! Remember that time…” and then her face went blank, tilted slightly to the side as she tried to place him. She’d apologised and said that his face was familiar, but that she didn't know him. The way she had smiled politely as she’d moved on had left him feeling like he was walking through a thick fog. He hugged himself tighter, the chill that settled in his bones a constant reminder of the day.
