The sterile white of the laboratory offered little comfort to Samuel. He stared at the test results, the numbers swimming before his eyes. He felt a profound sense of exhaustion, a bone-deep weariness that had settled over him for weeks. His movements had become labored, his mind foggy.

A woman walked over, her expression concerned. She was the other patient in the trial. She gave him a weak smile.

“Anything?” she asked, her voice weary.

Samuel shook his head. “Same thing. It is like there is a lead weight on my body.”

She sighed, a sound of shared defeat. “Me too.”
