He adjusted his tie for the tenth time, glancing at his reflection in the shop window. He'd rehearsed the words, the way he would say them. He felt a thrumming excitement within him, a kind of excited energy. He'd purchased the ring this afternoon, a small, elegant diamond, and kept it hidden in his pocket. The plan was flawless: a sunset stroll on the beach, a whispered promise, and the beginning of forever.

As he walked towards the park, he was looking forward to the moment when she would be standing there. He spotted her by the water, her back to him, laughing. He quickened his pace, his heart beginning to pound.

He got closer and saw another man, also holding a bouquet, approach her. The man bent down and kissed her. Confusion and a strange sensation washed over him. He felt as if someone had punched him in the gut.
