The crumpled piece of paper felt like a hidden treasure in Leo's hands. He smoothed it out carefully, revealing Sarah’s untidy handwriting. “Learn to play the guitar.” “See a Broadway show.” And then, number four: “Build a treehouse with Leo.” His breath hitched. He reread the words, the corners of his mouth tilting upwards, unable to stop the stupid grin.

The world seemed sharper, the colors more vibrant. He pictured them, laughing, covered in sawdust, constructing a clumsy treehouse in their backyard. He thought about the laughter, the shared effort, the inside joke it would become. He immediately started planning.
