The lottery ticket trembled in her trembling hand. She’d won! Finally! The numbers matched! Freedom! She leaped onto the kitchen table, accidentally knocking over a vase of wilting lilies. Their soggy demise was nothing compared to this! She let out a whoop, high and shrill.

A pounding on the front door. "Martha!" The voice of Mr. Peterson from next door, barely audible over the thumping music. “Turn that down! I'm trying to watch the game!”

She ripped the front door open, nearly ripping the screen door off its hinges, beaming. “Mr. Peterson! I just… I won the lottery!”

Mr. Peterson stared at her, dumbfounded. The game forgotten. "You... you're joking, right?"

"Nope!" she exclaimed, waving the winning ticket in front of his face. "I'm rich! I can buy you a new television if you want! Or maybe… a whole new house for you. And I can even… I dunno, throw a parade!”
