The constant buzzing of the power saw sliced through the afternoon calm. Sarah glared at the wall next to her patio. The construction was now directly visible from her kitchen window. She had been meaning to paint the kitchen for months, and now, it felt like she was constantly being judged.

She had spent the morning trying to clean the garden, but the dust and noise kept driving her back inside. She felt a prickle of annoyance on her skin. She hated the feeling of being exposed.

She closed the blinds, then immediately opened them again. She couldn’t stay hidden. She clenched her jaw. She would not let this project ruin her afternoon. But the sound of hammering made her want to weep.
