The music swelled, and Ethan saw Maya across the dance floor. He was immediately transported back to their shared history, every argument, every laugh, every tender moment. It was all there, in the air.

He felt a deep sense of responsibility, a profound understanding of the hurt he had caused. He’d hurt her, and that was that.

Later, he watched her from afar. She looked lost, and he wished he could just make it all better. The easiest way to make it better would be to leave her be. But before he could think too much more about it, she saw him, and offered a weak smile. He looked away, and quickly made his way to the buffet.
